Charles Darwin 2009 - PT

In 2009 we celebrated 200 years of Darwin's birth, and 150 of his most important work 'The Origin of Species'.
The Portuguese post office issued a set with a drawing of Charles Darwin, and important species studied by him.

Because Darwin is so famous, i cant say anything special about him that wouldn't just be a copy of some literature or a biography of his life, so i'll just leave you this picture of the set, that I have added today to my collection in mint condition. There is also a special sheet of this issue. Although i don't have it, here it goes too.

Fishing Eagles 2009 - PT

Another set i got on Fauna. It was a joint issue Portugal-Iran representing 2 fishing eagles, both species can be found in Portuguese territory.

-0,32 Osprey, Pandion haliaetus.

It's a beautiful eagle with a special design to make the impact on the water a lot easier. It places the nest in cliffs near the coast and trees near lakes. Some European countries are making efforts to increase the population of this species, although it remains very vulnerable to extinction.
According to the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity Institute there are only a few remaining in the teritory.

-0,80 White-tailed Eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla.

It's a big eagle characterized by a distinct white tail. Inhabits essentially Europe, Asia and South west Greenland, wondering around aquatic areas, so it can feed on fish, it's main diet, but it also eats other birds, mammals and sometimes carcasses. This eagle makes big nests in cliffs and big trees near water sources.
Like the osprey, some countries try to protect and increase the populations.


Personally i think this issue is beautiful and the eagles are well represented, with the wings spread in mid-flight, after just caught a fish. Going straight to the album in mint condition, with a few notes. :)

Azores Lakes/Biodiversity 2009 - PT

I just added this beautiful series i got today to my collection. It was issued in a joint effort with the Institute for Nature and Biodiversity Conservation adding to the European project «to stop biodiversity loss until 2010».
The stamps represent some of the famous lakes of Azores Islands as well as its Fauna and flora. Like with other older issues from the Portuguese postal office, i noticed the 4 stamps can form a continuous drawing .



Issued: 22, April 2009 - Portugal

-0,32 Represents Comprida Lake, in Flores Island with a Scolopax rusticola, a very common bird that can be found across Asia and Europe, hence why it's known as Eurasian Woodcock.

-0,68 Lake of Caldeirão in Corvo Island. The beautiful butterfly represented is a Hipparchia azorina. This species is endemic to Azores and is currently threatened.

-0,80 Lake of Capitão in Pico. The Dragonfly on this stamp is a Anax imperator, an amazing blue variety.

-2,00 Lagoinha in Terceira: the fruit in the drawing is from a tree endemic to Azores, the Juniperus brevifolia.


With their natural beauty, the Azores Lakes play a big role for the Archipelago to be considered, by the international tourism, the 2nd best Islands group in the world. With its geologic, biologic and economic contribution, they should in fact be a patrimony to preserve and protect.
They are fundamental for the water cycles, landscape balance, and most important, they're on the Atlantic route of migratory birds.
Surprisingly i never visited Azores, but i plan to, it is a trip nobody should miss, at least once in your life.
